3 Movies You Probably Didn’t Know Were Filmed in Athens

Georgia, otherwise known as the “Hollywood of the South,” has grown to be a major movie hotspot in the past two decades. You probably already know that basically every Marvel movie, including one of the highest grossing movies of all time “Avengers: Endgame,” was filmed here. Other studios have taken notice and started the move to the east coast too. However, most pre-production and post-production is still being done in Hollywood.

Now that a full-blown movie studio and soundstage is coming right here to Athens, every phase of the production process will be encouraged to stay in Georgia. Thanks to Athena Studios, we expect to see great films that put our bulldog loving town on the movie map. Here at Ciné, we couldn’t be more excited to see Athens become Hollywood 2.0!

Athens already has a significant film repertoire that most don’t know about. Over 20 movies have been filmed here. So, grab a friend, your favorite drink and some popcorn because here’s a list of 3 of our favorite movies filmed here since 2000 (and where you should go to relive some of the movie moments).

  1. Trouble with the Curve (2012) – This sports drama starring Clint Eastwood, Justin Timberlake and Amy Adams follows the story of a baseball scout’s last recruiting trip. He is forced to accept help from his daughter as they visit one of the country’s best baseball prospects. This is the biggest box office hit filmed in Athens with arguably the most notable and high-profile cast. Go take a stroll through Oconee Hill Cemetery or get a drink at The Globe to feel like you’re really there with Clint and Justin.
  2. The Spectacular Now (2013) – Filmed entirely in Athens, this A24 indie flick tells the coming-of-age romance story of an unlikely couple: a popular yet lost boy and a shy, introverted “good girl.” The film focuses on the awkwardness and anxiety that accompanies the transition from teenage years to adulthood. It stars Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley and Brie Larson. You might just notice some familiar locations like Clarke Central High School, Wuxtry’s Comic Shop and the Miller Learning Center while watching…
  3. Road Trip (2000) – This is a staple in the raunchy college comedy genre of the early 2000s. This film follows a group of friends on their road trip from New York to Texas as they try to save a relationship from failure. Starring Todd Phillips, Tom Green and Amy Smart, it was one of the last movies to be filmed on the University of Georgia campus. Watch it and see if you can spot any UGA landmarks!

If you are in the mood for a total Athens movie marathon, check out this list for more movies or shows to enjoy! We bet there’s probably some you wouldn’t expect. Also be sure to stay updated on what’s coming soon to Ciné because we tend to screen your favorite Athens movies from time to time!

Writer’s Note: I wrote this blog for my final project for ADPR 5920: Public Relations Communication. For this project, I partnered with Ciné, a local business in Athens, Georgia. For this blog, I did research on the local film industry to inform the audience about Athens’ movie presence.
